Aaja sanam...

One of the important films in the career of the pair of Raj Kapoor and Nargis was Chori Chori. Tho the film was a remake of a Hollywood hit, it tapped all the Bollywood emotions. And how could anybody forget most important part of great music and songs!!

Voices of Manna Dey and Lata made this Shankar-Jaikishan tune unforgettable. Nargis portrays the changing emotions with mastery. Or may be it was the real life chemistry between her and Raj Kapoor that made this possible. People start all sort of gossip; leaving them behind watch this great gem of Hindi cinema!

Watch "Aaja Sanam Madhur Chandani - Raj Kapoor, Nargis, Chori Chori Song" on YouTube

Jab Tak Hai Jaan ...

As I promised in last post this post is for the music review of Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

It started with that poem Aditya Chopra wrote - I was not impressed. Challa came out I started listening, Saans was just okay, and it struck with the Jiya re! Rahman does it again. This is a typical Rahman soundtrack with Yash Chopra heart! Don't think it as a cliched statement - this soundtrack comes to you slow - it is not strong and it gets you hooked up just when you are not expecting - you can not leave it and start listening it over and over again - that is a win for Mr. Rahman!! Lyrics wise it is far better than other Rahman songs as Yashji has take all the care to give this task to great penman Gulzar! And Gulzar writes a great poetry which suits Yashji's direction style - Romanticism unleashed.

Starting with Challa - Rabbi Shergil, one of my favorite Punjabi singers, sang this song. Tho lyrics are in Punjabi, they wont harm your listening or humming. Great starting notes which continues as a soft rock song. Telling you to "Keep walking alone - you do not need anybody", Gulzar gives you something to think.

Tho, not one of my favorite songs, Saans is a good love song. Mohit Chauhan returns with Rahman after Rockster. He and Sherya Ghoshal sings an intense composition but you won't find same Rahman here. More of an average love song - may be a good situation song - need to wait and see it in movie.

Rahman tries to create a dance number with Ishq Shava and succeeds at a certain extent. I was expecting a faster track with some more electro-music. This is a good song but is not a chartbuster. Even the singer choices can be better!

Now my favorite song from the album - Jiya Re. Neeti Mohan makes a great use of this opportunity and delivers a great song. You will not think this as a Rahman song but it's a complete mix of Yash Chopra style with Rahman. You get the energy of a free soul from this song - a crazy girl daring to live her life on her own terms transmits significant vibe - and Rahman has successfully composed Gulzar's lyrics!

One more mention: Heer. Harshdeep Kaur sings this Yash Chopra style Punjabi song. While listening the song you can imagine the dreamy girl waiting for her prince charming. That's the wining of Rahman and Gulzar.

After listening all these songs you will also agree - Rahman soundtrack with Yashji's heart!

Yashji will always be living in the loving hearts of Bollywood fans!

Ishq wala Love ...

Two music directors come together to sing this song, Salim Merchant from Salim-Sulaiman and Shekhar Ravjiani from Vishal-Shekhar, later also composing music for this movie SOTY Student of the year! They sing with Neeti Mohan coming from Channel V Popstars "Aasma". She is leaving her greatest time now - singing two sensations - this song and "Jiya re" from Jab Tak hai Jaan.

Karan Johar introduces three gen-next stars in this movie - a big start kids launcher.I have not seen the movie but this song has great visuals - Karan Johar never leaves behind anything to picturize a great song. Colors bursting in the snow - rich pink, fluorescent green, and chili hot red - with slow motion to capture awkward expressions on actors' faces!

The song itself is a good. Catchy tune - no wonder it stuck in my mind! I am still not completely in for the term "Ishq wala Love" but as you are making more and more Hinglish movies - it's a good term to keep you reminding about ishq while you are in love ;)

Viraaniya (Mehfil Mix)

Remixes are made in many different forms. This is called Mehfil mix - Mehfil stands for a traditional lounge party in places of Muslim royalty or noblemen. In modern India, Mehfil is seen as a musical program for a classical or semi-classical music and especially Gazals. And this mix satisfies the need of nice poetry (Gazal) rendered by none other than poet himself.

Javed Akhtar penned this song with all Sher (small pieces of poetry at start and in between). He also performs the task of reciting those Sher. The song has a nice music by Himesh Reshamiya. He has composed many nice tracks and this is one of those. Though this song is one of the songs in the era of Singer: Himesh, he is much more appealing for this slow and romantic track. A lover calling for his lost love and saying his life is nothing but just ruins of past without love.

Navarai & Dreamum Wakeuppam

The newest versatile composer in the Bollywood is making Hulla in the music industry and he has composed these two very different songs for the films released in back to back weeks. The composer is Amit Trivedi. I have already started posting his songs from Coke Studio "Nirmohiya". And that trend is continuing. I noticed him from Dev-D , the song "Emotional Atyachaar" was the rock-bomb on traditional film music.

The first movie is the Shridevi comeback - English Vinglish. This is a family entertainer with a housewife in the lead role. Amit has covered all the emotions of a Marathi housewife and composed the song Navarai Majhi. He perfectly shows vibe in the wedding and still manages to keep it subtle.

The second movie just released one week after this - Aiyyaa. Amit takes dream sequence of Rani Mukerjee in the South Indian films and composes Dreamum Wakeuppam. This is a vibrant song which doesn't let you take your breath. Dance performance of Rani and sex appeal of Prithviraj makes it one rocking song. The use of tamil numbers is just awesome.

Enjoy!!

PS: Both movies are directed by Marathi directors. Looks like with Amit, Gauri Shinde and Sachin Kundalkar are also ready to capture Bollywood.

Skyfall

.... gives me goosebumps for the next Bond! Adele, one of the best singers, takes you in the world of the 007. Soft starting turns in to the strong sensation of the music. It gives you feel of both late 60's and still somewhere in 2012.

It is already a hit, placing number one on many charts. No wonder the Bond will get a great opening. Now with the internet it doesn't take long to get 12 million views to a song. I guess Eon production is using a great marketing strategy for Skyfall. They started with trailer, continuing the pace with the song and also putting old bond movies on netflix to get audience hooked up with Bond and attract them to the theaters.

Let's go back to the song. Adele is a great artist and she has already proved it with her previous album. This song is little bit different tho. Her voice is seductive. She perfectly imitates the emotions of the Bond girl - asking James - they will stay together. I suppose many girls will be ready to tell it Daniel Craig listening this song! It's not a very hard song to perform and follows the typical pattern of the Bond theme. Tho that's the point of this song to give a great start to any Bond movie.

Get ready to welcome Mr. Bond - James Bond !!

Gangnam Style ..

Finally it reached India ... Just in morning my brother asked me about it and I thought it's a high time now to post it here. This song was stuck in my mind for a long time though it has released only for three months - it has more than 265,000,000 views on youtube. My friend also listened it on radio here in US.Mr. Psy is rocking the world with his latest sensation "Gangnam Style".

If you review the song - it has catchy music which makes you start dancing immediately even if you are not familiar with the language. The rhythm is perfect for a club dance number and lyrics are smart and simple "oppan/oppa Gangnam Style"  which means Oppa (older guy/ brother) is dancing in the style from Gangnam (Place near Seoul, South Korea). Also use of words like "hey sexy lady" makes it appealing to audience all over the world.

And I don't need to talk about the legendary dance performance by Psy - I have also imitated his horseback riding dance. Fortunately did not make that video haha!! So go ahead and get on your imaginary horse and start Gangnam Style!!

Tu Aaja Mere Mahi...

I am not a big fan of Emraan Hashmi, but boy he has got a number of hit songs. I guess his songs have played a huge role in his success. Aashiq Banaya Aapne, Zeher, Jannat the list just goes on. This song particularly was stuck in my head for the whole weekend.

New music duo of Toshi and Sharib Sabri had made this beautiful song. I don't feel there is anything new in it but it really makes it compiling to song to listen and continue to listen. Nice rhythm and lyrics with good use of Toshi's voice.

Kiska Chehra ...

Some of the films you remember because of their songs, and this one comes close. Tarkieb, a multi-starer film with Tabu, Milind Soman, Nana Patekar and many more. Jagjit Singh made many melodious movie songs. Kiska Chehra is sung by him with Alka Yagnik. It was penned by Nida Fazli and composed by Aadesh Srivastava.

Two lovers are telling each other that they don't want to see any one else as they have chosen each other after seeing the world. He is saying I have seen moon, flowers, clouds, firefly and still I can not compare your beauty with anything. A nice love poem and great voice of Jagjit Singh made this song one to remember a long time.

Chupke se sun...

Sometimes some songs are so soothing and still they have one uneasiness in them. This fells in the same category. Shankar Ehsaan Loy made an awesome music for Mission Kashmir. Preity Zinta and Hritik Roshan act in this song.

The music takes you to the paradise of the India - Kashmir and at the same time shows you the rage in the situation. Dal lake is very calm and quiet - it has shikara with lovers and still the lover can not concentrate. He wants to achieve something else - something bad - something which is going on for a long time in his head . From childhood he has seen the attacks and war and he feels this calmness of the lake is fake and there is still war going on.

Ek Pal Ka Jeena ...

The big entry of the next superstar in the Bollywood was marked by this hit number. He surprised everyone with his good acting and great dancing skills. Hrithik Roshan made it big!  Every child in every house was obsessed of dancing and every school or college social had this number performed at least 2 or 3 times.

Lucky Ali marked his debut in Hindi film singing with a Filmfare with this film. Though the song was different, he had nomination for this song too. Grooving composition of Rajesh Roshan and Ibrahim Ashq (Lyrics). The song gives a great start for youth philosophy of "You did not bring anything in this world and you will take nothing with you (after death) so just spread the music, laughs, and Love".

Tung Tung

MTV India is actually doing a great job of making some music and promoting different trends in the music. I thought after some weird reality shows they are back to their basics - M - Music TV. This time though it's not the Coke studio. A new program this year was Sound Trippin. Sneha Khanwalker visited parts of India and collected different sounds of those parts and added them together with earthy voices from those parts. With a tadka of some dub-step she had a awesome album for the first season.

Today's song is from Nooran sisters, so it was Sneha who found them and after they sang in coke studio. But she captured various sounds of Punjab - the sound of announcer, factory, cane crusher and saaz (Musical Instruments) which is the main part of the song.

Husna...

Husna .. a legendary track written and sung by Piyush Mishra and recreated by Hitesh Sonik. This track is about thoughts of a lover who is separated from his love because of the partition of India in 1947. He wants to know if is it all same in two countries - if there are same love stories of Heer-Ranza - if there are same festivals - if there are same air and light and everything or is it changed after we separated ?

This song gives goosebumps every time I hear it. I guess it is combination of music and the voice of Piyush. At the end Piyush gives a punch asking if the Pakistan also cries in the night similar to India (remembering the old love)!

Allah Hoo

The Coke studio fever continues! I am always the fan of Sufi songs and this is one of those moments when you connects to the almighty no matter what your religion is! It goes beyond just music and makes your sole humble.

Great rendition by Nooran sisters and Hite Sonik. The nice work of Coke studio of finding talents all over India and giving them light to perform on the national level.

Lambi Judaai

There are many versions of this song and I like all of them!! It starts from Reshma Pakistani singer from 80's. Then we have this song in Hindi movie Hero. Later it appeared again in Jannat in two forms - slow and The Kilogram Mix. In Coke studio Pakistan Komal Rizvi sang this song with a different passion.

How about you listen all the songs and let me know which is your favorite one ?

Tumse milke aisa laga..

Madhuri and Anil Kapoor .. one of the best couple on screen in late 80's and 90's Hindi movies. This song combines them with the great Rahulda! Tumse milke aisa laga .. was the simple love song from the violent underworld story - Parinda. Vidhu Vinod Chopra made this song a memorable watch. Voices of Suresh Wadkar and Asha Bhosle made this one of the unforgettable.

Lakdi ki kathi ...

Shekhar Kapoor made some awesome movies in Hindi and Masoom was one of those. Gulzaar penned some great songs for the movie and they all received great music by Rahulda (R D Burman). This one is my childhood favorite. I had a cassette tape called "Children's songs" and I used to listen this song sitting on my wooden horse! Imagination of children that what their horse will do in the city and performance of Urmila, Jugal and Aradhana. Gauri Bapat, Gurpreet Kaur, Vanita Mishra gave their voices to enjoying children and made this song an unforgettable one!

Hoton pe Jaan ..

Some songs don't get appreciated when they first come but later when somebody remixes them or just remasters them they get picked up and become legend. This is one of those songs.

Kishore Kumar has sung many famous love songs - this was never a famous one. Nice composition from Bappida! But when music company remastered this song and re-released with a new video - it became the selling point of their entire collection. I am adding the original one too - watching that you might see why this was not hit that time ;)

Jaane kyun dil jaanta hai...

Dostana (2008) was a funny movie. I think it's a wild comedy with the Bollywood melodrama twist! Does friendship between boy and girl always have to go in the way of relationship? I guess if you leave that question aside - this song showing friendship between Priyanka, John, and Abhishek as roommates is a very nice song. It says "I know if you are there with me then I'll be all right !" In your good times - when you are having fun - in your bad time - when you are drunk - in funny time -when you are scared of a scary movie - your friend will always be there! (He/she might come and scare you :p)

Ek pyaar ka nagma hai ...

From the movie Shor, a soothing song sung by Lata. Laxmikant- Pyarelal gave their best composed tracks to Lata and Lata made them Golden songs !! Nice use of violin and Mukesh's voice. Kamini Kaushal portrays mom loving her kid and playing in the sea with him. Santosh Anand - a not so famous lyricist wrote the nice verses telling "this life is nothing but just a story of you and me .. !"

Kal bhi aaj bhi Kal bhi ..

There are some jingles which made the particular brand the household name. One of those jingles was VIP luggage jingle "Kal Bhi Aaj Bhi kal bhi ..."

In 1990's when India was just opening it's market for the foreign products, VIP started this ad campaign and it made VIP as a leading luggage brand in India. I am not sure about the advertising agency or people behind this great ad campaign but sometimes when I become nostalgic - I remember this ad.

Kumar Sanu ... I have argued for him before and still I want to support him. He was the "King of Love Songs" for the 90's ! Gorgeous Suchitra Krishnamurti and Sharukh again trying to steal somebody's girlfriend. But in the movie Kabhi haan kabhi naa  he doesn't get Suchitra at the end - meets Juhi as the consolation prize :p This is nice humming tune of Jatin-Lalit and awesome direction of Kundan Shah made this song a memorable one.

I don't care how many people say he was not good or say he used to sing bad - he rocked the 90's! And I personally liked his songs. He has a nice soothing voice which suits perfectly to the love songs and I miss him now actually. This song is from movie Dilwale. Song sung by Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik composed by none other than Nadeem-Shravan and penned by Sameer! This was the deadliest combination of 90's.

Tum bin jaon kaha .. And Haila Haila ..

Today 2 songs were in my head ... there is not pattern in this mix, and I could not find why I was thinking of these two completely not connected songs. First is versatile singer Kishore Kumar - from movie "Pyaar ka mausam" This song was sung by 2 singers in the film - Kishor da and Md. Rafi, but my choice is Kishor da especially when he sings the starting "Ha ha ha" . Kishor's full version is not in the movie, only short version is there but I could find the full version in audio!

Second song is from movie "Koi mil gaya". Composed by Rajesh Roshan and filmed on Hritik Roshan and Preity Zinta. Funny dance of Hritik and catchy tune.

This song is from "Mere Brother ki Dulhan" sounds like any love rock song but Dr.Irshad Kamil (yup he is PhD) has added deeper meaning in it ... My most favorite term is about "khudako dhunde to usako pawe ... "  you don't need to search for God - if you search for yourself and found your true self then you will find God - really amazing !

Break your heart

It's easy to maintain a small blog ! It's hard to write about one subject and complete it with all editing and other stuff with sound research but for blog with 2 lines and a song .. very easy. Just start blogger, open youtube. search the song you are humming in the morning or any time of the day and done ..

Friday - party time so get in the mood (not posting Rebecca Black song here ;) )

Taio Cruz is rocking the club and he is Heart breaker !! Get on the dance floor and Break your heart ...

Soothing voice of Suresh Wadkar with Hemlata. Nice composition of Ravindra Jain! Typical Rajashri family movie - Nadiya ke par (1982). Sachin in his golden days !!

Mere meheboob qayamat hogi

This is a very beautiful song from Kishor Kumar!

From Mr. X in Bombay, starring  Kum kum and KK himself so this is a double bonus, but this song just has KK in his ghost form.

Disturbia

Today's song is from Rihanna !!

Her 2008 single Disturbia. Some weird video but nice electro-pop song. Catchy "Bum Bum be Dum Bum"

(Sorry I guess Sony doesn't want you to watch it here so you have to go to Youtube !)

Bole re Papi hara

Friends .. After trying different things in my original blog "Flavors of the World" I decided to make this different one just for songs.

Everyday I get up and there is a song stuck in my head. I listen that song in the morning, watch on youtube, read some description and trivia. This might have happened with you too.

So I will post one song - can't say that I will do it daily but I will post the song of the day which is stuck in my head ...!

Today's song: Bole re papihara. Film: Guddi (1971). Singer: Vani Jayram. On screen beautiful Jaya !!

Enjoy !!
